Careers

Are you committed to eliminating the achievement gap by preparing male students for college?

Do you believe that African American boys are capable of academic excellence when provided extraordinary teachers and a strong, achievement oriented school culture? Do you believe a school organized around well-defined structures, consistent expectations for academic and intellectual excellence will transform an inner city boy’s life? Have you closed the achievement gap through rigorous, well-planned instruction?   We are looking for you!

The Septima Clark Public Charter School is the first public charter school for boys in Washington, DC. The school is built on the No Excuses philosophy. Schools created around a culture of achievement and excellence ensure that the most under-served children are competent, capable, and competitive. A No Excuses school is built by people with a sharp focus on academic achievement, commitment to work hard, unrelenting focus on student outcomes, and people who find joy in excellence.

Rigorous Qualifications[1]

Teacher quality is the single most accurate indicator of a student’s performance in the classroom.[2] A number of studies on teacher quality and the impact on student achievement support this statement. Research on high-effective teachers provides focus to SCPCS’s teacher selection process. Prospective teachers will demonstrate their qualifications to be a member of the Septima Clark team in four major areas: 1) Expert Content Knowledge, 2) Teaching Expertise, and 3) Strong Curriculum Development Ability.

Expert Content Knowledge demonstrated by
  • excellent grades in undergraduate and/or graduate coursework and in relevant content area; and,
  • a written analysis of a current pedagogical issue related to your instructional content area.
Teaching Expertise demonstrated by
  • assessment data analysis for one entire classroom of students accompanied by a written narrative that provides background on the assessments, discusses the data and student outcomes;
  • submission of a portfolio of student work that demonstrates progress of two specific students (preferably a male student two grade levels behind and a male student at grade level or advanced) accompanied by written analysis of the progress each student demonstrates;
  • strong verbal ability demonstrated in the quality of written work and communication skills; and,
  • a day-long teaching and interviewing audition in SCPCS classrooms.
 Strong Curriculum Development Ability demonstrated by
  • the submission of any two originally developed and refined curricular tools. Preferred tools are unit plans, exit tickets, guided reading or math lesson plans, student work materials, formative or summative assessments, or standards alignment materials.

[1] As a No Excuses school, SCPCS has adapted some elements of its rigorous hiring and selection processes from other high performing schools/networks including Building Excellent Schools, the Achievement First Network, The Equity Project PCS, DC-Prep, and Uncommon Schools.
