Academic Achievement News

The Septima Clark Public Charter School is the first public school for boys in Washington, DC. Our mission is to prepare our scholars to enter and succeed from highly selective high schools; then enter and graduate from college. To achieve our mission, we actively assess our students’ skill mastery. While we are not required to formally assess students until the 3rd grade, we implement a formal assessment program in all grades using nationally recognized standardized achievement tests. Data are used to plan and drive high impact instructional strategies.

Response to Performance Management Framework Report Card
The DC Public Charter School Board recently released its first Performance Management Framework (PMF) Report Card.  elow to see our academic outcomes over the past three years.  The PMF Report Card was created to assess a charter school’s academic performance, using an academic evaluation framework comprised of indicators and metrics to measure academic performance in four domains: (1) student progress, (2) student achievement, (3) gateway measures, and (4) leading indicators.  The PMF Report Card has three tiers - Tier 1, 2, or 3 based on scores obtained in these four domains.  The Septima Clark Public Charter School received a Tier 3 designation for the 2010-11 school year on the PMF Report Card.

The Tier 3 designation was not suprising considering that Septima Clark had relocated at the beginning of SY 2010-11.  This was the third relocation in five years due to inadequate facilities. "Relocation has wreaked havoc on the stability of our program," says Jenny DuFresne, Founder/Head of School, "Each relocation has meant a 50% loss of students and a complete rebuilding of our academic program. We end up enrolling new scholars, many of whom, score in the 1st to 25th percentile, on standardized assessments upon enrollment." This challenge largely contributed to the school receiving Tier 3 status on the Public Charter School Board's Performance Management Framework Report Card. The school's committed staff and leadership expect significant academic growth on the 2011-12 Performance Management Framework Report Card.
