Septima Clark Awarded Early Reading First Grant

Septima Clark PCS, in partnership with the Sunshine Early Learning Center, in Washington, DC was awarded one of 28 Early Reading First Grants by the U.S. Department of Education in October 2009.  Early Reading First is a highly competitive national grant awarded to programs with a strong commitment and focus on developing oral language and literacy experiences for preschool and prekindergarten children.  Helping Emergent Literacy Progress (HELP) is a diverse partnership between Septima Clark Public Charter School, Sunshine Early Learning Center, Educational Solutions, LLC, Youth Policy Institute, and D.C. Public Library designed to create Centers of Instructional Excellence that serve between 170 children.  HELP will use a Recognition and Response (R&R) model designed to enhance the quality of classroom instruction as well as student outcomes in oral language, phonological awareness, phonological memory, print awareness, rapid naming of letters and alphabet knowledge.
